'40 Ford Exhaust System

My '40 Fordor is going to need a complete exhaust system. The current dual system has developed some cracks and was not very well done to begin with. Has anyone out there had any experience with Waldron Antique Exhaust in Centerville MI? Also would appreciate comments on any other vendors. Thanks.

Order a dual exhaust system. They only have the pipes from the muffler back. Didn't have the exhaust pipes from the engine to the muffler. He was eager to fill the order but won't return several calls. Good Luck

The 40 Ford car exhaust system is a bear to install as the left header pipe must clear the clutch pedal when it is depressed. The best way to go is to have one made at an exhaust shop that deals with custom fabrication and high quality.

I am doing a '41 Pickup which has the same frame as the forty. I bought Fenton headers and the first extension from the header (Red's Headers sold them to me). The left extension goes past the the master cylinder. It was too close to the MC because I used a Corvette MC which is wider than stock. I had the muffler shop tweak the pipe to fit better. I would not have a muffler shop make that extension unless they are real good at it.

I bought some pipe from the muffler shop and added a two foot extension onto the original extension and installed the Smitty after. I then added the long ending piece onto the Smitty. Since I don't have a roller and couldn't take the frame to the muffler shop. I had to run back to the muffler shop to get the pipes bent to fit. This took several trips and I will never do it that way again. I suggest getting the Fenton headers, first extension and Smittys from Red's and take it to the muffler shop for completion. All of the exhaust system is at frame height except where it goes below the rearend.

Jim, I bought an original Walker exhaust pipe for a 1963 Fairlane from Waldron. It fit very well and he charged a fair price for it. I have a 40 4-door also, but I have never bought any 40 exhaust parts from him, I belive him to be honest to deal with. Tom

Go with "Red's Headers" in California. His stuff will fit and he makes custom fitting headers and exhaust......and he has sets that deal with different engine combinations....like mine was a 59AB in a 1935 Ford 5 window Coupe with a 1938 steering box with the battery moved to the passenger wall. It does get complicated doesn't it? Good luck,...Matt in Alameda

I would recommend finding a good exhaust shop in your area and have them custom fit the exhaust. If you find a shop that works on streetrods you will be O.K. Do not go to a production shop like Midas or Mieneke or any other chain store. They know very little or nothing about doing a custom job. Let us know where you live and maybe someone here can refer you to a shop in your area. Tom Johnston
