40 Ford Dash Ash Tray Question ???

I have a 1940 Ford Dash in my 32 Roadster. It came with some ash tray parts but for the life of me, I can't figure how to install them. From my internet research I see there two different styles of Ash Trays. My question number one is
Were there two different style holes for the inserts to hook into?
#2 I see they make two styles of inserts. Are the ash trays the same? I don't care if mine pull out or drop down, I just want to fill the holes. Thanks, Jim
 
The ashtrays that slide up have a separate ash receptacle that fits in the dash. The ones that tilt out have the outside cover with the knob attached to the receptacle and the whole unit tilts out. The dash will determine which style to use. Look in the opening where the ash tray goes. If you see a back wall in there with a couple holes that will be for the slide up style if it's just an empty hole that's for the tilt out style. Post a pic if you can.
 
Pictures show the mounts on early & late dash panels. Black dash is late, early dash has ash tray in place.

I think it best I take and post pictures of what I have. From what I remember, There is no back to the hole where the ash tray fits in. There are two flaps on the sides of the hole with a screw hole on each side. Flaps are about 1/2 inch deep. Does that tell you anything? Jim
 
Thanks Dick, Based on your pictures mine is like your black late style. Maybe my insert bracket is for the early style. Are the ash trays different for early and late style dashes? Thanks guys, Jim
 
Jim, the ash trays are different for the two dashes. Early pushes in and up to open them and the later model opens out of the dash. I believe Bob Drake sells repos of the later units.
I can post a picture of the early pieces if that would help. I don't have any of the late pieces. Dick
 
Hi Dick,
I have the later model Dash from pictures that have been posted here. Not sure my inserts or ash trays are correct for the later Dash. I'll get pictures up tomorrow and we can figure this out. Thanks, Jim
