Frank, The material was wrapped around the header with the "cut ends" positioned within the recess. Subsequently, the rubber seal was installed in the slot which covered the loose ends and nails.

I havent bought the top yet so not sure about your answer. The top material is cutout to fit in the recesses for the locks and top irons? Wish I had a pics.

Frank, Typically within a "kit" you will receive enough bowdrill material to cover the front (wood) bow as well as the center of the #2 (steel) bow. The #2 steel bow only gets covered on the center area.
The rear wood bow as well as the #3 (steel) bow do not get covered.
The material you typically get is not cut to fit. That's something the installer is expected to do.
