40 door lock questions

Breaking the drill bit.Unless you can flatten out that screw head and center punch before drilling it will be a mess.It happened to me a few yrs ago.The exiting screw in there appears to be slotted.

Am I in trouble if I screw up the sleeve? It appears that the set screw is neither slotted or an Allen style. I’m kind of thinking maybe someone has already started trying to drill it out…

What’s the issue with just drilling it out?

Drilling it out depends upon the type of metal. Most of those are a hardened set screw and they are EXTREMELY difficult to drill.

Yes sir. EXACTLY why I had suggested removing the door panel and heating up the sleeve that the screw resides in.

Cool. No door panels so I’ll give it a few heat cycles. Is heating to cherry red too much? Maybe that will burn out some of the crud in there too and I can see if it’s slotted or Allen.

I bought new locks from Kube (thanks) so I’m not too worried about messing up the old one since it’s not original anyway.

Be careful with heat as it will warp the door skin. put some kinda insulator behind the lock, sheet of tin or aluminum

With care, there is no fear of heating the door skin. That sleeve the screws resides in is a reasonable distance away from the door skin.
That sleeve heats up rapidly as it is so thin.
Still, your advice is good and I suppose to be on the safe side, a piece of tin may be of some usefulness "just in case".

I recently managed to drill out my stuck set screw. It was a process and took over a week of using diamond tipped Dremel bits (harbor freight) and cobalt drill bits (also harbor freight). You can read the entire process and see photos towards the end of the thread here: https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=330027

Thanks warbird. Someone posted that thread above and I read it this morning. Encouraged that you succeeded, discouraged at how long it took! Maybe I’ll get lucky but it looks as though my set screw has already been tampered with and might be half broken.

Well I started to work on it. Sure enough it seems as though someone already started drilling out the set screw. Sure enough, it’s hard as hell and I made zero progress. Not sure if I care enough to see it through before the interior is done. We’ll see if I get time.
