40 coupe rear window seals!!

Been having quite a time getting rear window seals to fit my coupe. I have bought 2 sets from Carpenter and both were HUGE. My glass was cut off original patterns and I double checked it against the paper template sent with the seals, spot on. See images below.

I have been waiting on Drakes seals since October '11 as I understand they have molded corners that fit better etc.

Does anybody have a source on an extra set of these, or at least some idea of what a guy can do to get this glass in!

Thanks so much,

I tried to use Carpenter seals for my 37 coupe rear window which is the same as 1940 and same thing way to big.sent back and got Drakes and they work fine. Try Dick Spadaro on Fordbarn he has Drake parts or at least I bought stuff from him that Drake was out of,at least he will be able to tell you supplier or a vendor who may have. I do not understand the Carpenter issue, years ago I never had a problem with rubber seals from him, great quality and fit on my 46 Ford and a 53 F-100 window seals but not on my 37 rear window quarter glass and windshield all poor fitting. His speciality besides knobs is radio antennaes and mine looks good but will not stay up ,my antennae that is ;)

30 years ago I used Drake's 1940 rear window rubber seals and they still fit fine today with no leaks. I did use sealant in the glass groove of the rubber. It wipes off with gasolene, kerosene or wax and grease remover solvent. I also used the same sealant on the gap between the sheet metal and the glass on the rear quarter windows so as to keep the water out. Used my finger to make a smooth fillet. Works great and looks great.

Carpenter is sending the sedan seals for the coupe. I had the same problem in 2004. I had only 2 days before heading off to a national meet, so I cut them at the seam, removed about 1 inch and reglued them with super glue.

I would try to get the coupe seals made by Drake.

I recently went through this with Carpenter's '40 coupe rear window seals. I had cut my Drake seals to install a headliner, planning on buying new Drake parts. Of course I later discovered the Drake parts were backordered. So I bought the Carpenter parts, they were much to long. I phoned Carpenter talking first to Clay with no satsfaction then to Tom Bruce who swore I had the correct parts and there was nothing to be done except to return them for a refund with me paying the postage.I ended up taking an inch and a half out and super glueing back together. they still don't lay down in the corners properly. I was glad to see this post because I'm sure I wasn't alone with this problem.

Been there, done this several times with several 40 coupes I've owned - the Drake ones were the only ones that fit properly. I did the same thing as 19Fordy. I fought with and eventually threw away anything else other than Drake's seals.

BTW - there is a difference between the coupe and sedan rear windows/seals?

Guys, I to have had some problems with the new run of gaskets, there is some degree of issue with the Carpenter seals. I have been fitting them in a rear window opening and trying to determine, besides being too big, what actually is the root of the issue. Since the sedan rear windows are smaller its not a packaging issue, this gasket is much to big it appears to be a measurement during assembly issue. I have addressed this over the last couple days with the DC staff and will get back with a followup result.

I keep hearing Bob Drake has the best rubber. I ordered all the window rubber back in December. Received other parts in January, all the window seals were back-ordered. Got my quarter window seals in March, nothing else. I hope its worth the wait!

I believe the problem goes back long before "the new run of gaskets". My ill fitting window seals had a packaging/or run date of 5-12-10. They just don't want to admit there is a problem.

Thank you all for the input and information. I have contacted Carpenter again this week and they told me that there WAS an issue the first of this year with the production of these. They were definitely incorrect and too long.

As Drakes aren't available (for over 6 months at least) I have ordered another 'new' set of Carpenters and should have them today or tomorrow. I will hopefully get them in this weekend and will let you all know the results.

Again, thanks for the replies and input, all very helpful.

Call around to the various parts dealers to see if they have a set of Drake ones on te shelf. I used Drake seals on my 37 coupe and they fit perfectly.

The problem goes back further than this at least I told them about it in '07. Still think you would have been better off trying to find or wait for Drakes.Did you contact Dick Spadaro? Early V8 in Springfield Ohio for a chance they may still have Drakes.Lots of vendors out there that deal Drakes parts.

I have had good luck in the past with Steele rubber products. Their catalog lists rear quarter window seals for 37 to 40. Replaces Ford #78-7029904 I don't have a new catalog but their last one listed them at$26.40/pair. Bonded ends.

FordLuver, Whats the deal on your NEW Carpenter rear window seals? Are they correct? Are they installed? Inquiring minds want to know.
