I am replacing the rear transmission output shaft seal on my '46 1-1/2 Ton. It is a 4 speed. I noticed immediately that the output shaft and park brake drum would slip in and out of the of the transmission about a 1/4", but not up and down. I believe this play is supposed to be prevented by the tightness of the nut that holds on the park brake drum. When the nut is fully tightened on my truck it buts up against the end of the threads on the output shaft, but it does not tight against the drum. The drum is slightly recessed on the splines so the nut never gets tight on the drum before it hits the end of the threads.
Inside the transmission the drum should butt up against the speedometer drive gear, but it is not tight against it now. I am thinking of placing a washer between the drum and the speedometer drive to space the drum out where I can get the nut tight on it. Is this a good idea? Any suggestions would help.
I posted pictures of the shaft with no drum on it. Another picture of the side of the drum that goes in the transmission with the nut in frame.
