390 or 428 ID

Is there a way to identify the year or CID of Ford big block motors(from the 1960's) by some kind of markings on the block? I know chev has casting #'s at the back of their blocks but what about Ford? I put out an ad wanting a 390 or 428 Ford motor and am getting responses from people who "THINK" they have what I need. I don't want to pay big bucks for a 352. Thanks, George in Northern Canada

The FE is a lot like a Y block in that the only definitive way to tell is measure the bore and/or stroke. Don't just love Fords? Have you looked at this site yet?........
