390 in a 58 wagon?

Just for clarity and not to confuse the OP (although I seemed to do a good job), below is an ILL of both 223 and 292/352 57/58 installs.

The 223 insulator (B7A 6038-A) is a little shorter than the 292/352 insulator (B7A 6038-B).

I really appreciate all the info you provide in your posts
Thanks a lot

BTW, in 1958, Edsel Citations had the 410 V8. Great engine, I thought

...whew...

...thought I was going to get yelled at again...

You are more than welcome. I miss being able to do what you guys are doing.

BTW- The 1958 EDSEL 410 E-475 was a MEL Engine Series (383-410-430-462)

It get's confusing too. The other V8 available in '58 on Edsels was the 360 which was an FE style engine.

Not to be disrespectful... :)

It was the 361. The 360 was a later FE LT engine.

The 361 was the first FE released as the 58 EDSEL had an earlier release than the rest of the lineup.

FORD of CANADA used the 361 in place of the 352 used here. They offered the 332 and 361 whereas the 361 was offered as a POLICE OPTION here only.

Now the MEL 410 was to be introduced on the 57 MERC lineup. Foundry/casting problems caused delayed release and MERC then chose the LYB 368 for it's premium power plant (along side the FYB 312 Safety-Surge 255HP).

Newer blocks back fit earlier cars, they have both old and new mounts and I believe 63 up came with alternator boss.

You are correct on both counts.

THANX for correcting that entry... :D

Below are photos of the early support skirts-

The re-design was to accommodate the engines series to FT HD Engines.

I don't think anyone mentioned the transmission. Unless you have the curved sidecover HD 3-speed that 390 will likely spit it right out, unless you are very gentle :)

Yes, Edsel did call it a 361 and Ford truck called it a 360, even though the bore and stroke are the same.

...hmmph...

You got me to thinking ... ...quite an accomplishment...

Did FORD re-name it (EDSEL 361) as the 360 so as not to cause/add confusion between it and the 361 FT HD?

i know since its an fe it will fit, but what else do i need to change? I'm pulling a 223 6 cyl thats in front of a 3 speed w/overdrive (keeping the ******). Besides the motor mounts, what else needs to be addressed

thanks

bill

good point!

Good question Kultulz. I have no idea what the HD truck 361 was based on, but the Edsel 361 and light truck 360 were both FE's but from different decades.

Can I cause confusion or what...

The EDSEL 361 was an FE with a 390 bore and a 352 stroke as was the later LT 360 FE.

What I was trying to say (somewhat poorly) did FORD ENGINEERING use the later 360 designation/description to differentiate it (360) from the same period 361 MD/HD (same bore and stroke).

The FT Series was FE based but built for MD/HT - 330-361-391.

I'm prejudiced toward the 390. We had the smaller 352 in a Galaxie and a 360 in a pickup and they were dogs compared to the 390. The 390 had an excellent balance between good power and economy. A friend of mine ran one hard with a super T-10 but wrecked the rear axle and it was a 9-inch too. He went back to an R11 overdrive so he could get the economy and still be able to have good performance. That was one tough set up.

The 410 was a square motor in that is had very near 4" X 4" bore & stroke and was a very good set up but it's a rare bear these days. You have to use a 428 crank in a 390 to get to 410 now days but how many of these old engines still have a 4.05" bore. The 406 was almost there but they changed the bore size to get it there. They have more power as do the 427/428 but you can't get the economy that a 390 offers. This is why the 390 lasted such a long time. There are new FE blocks being manufactured but they are likely geared more toward the 427 set up for the gold chainer club.

That '58 Ford brochure must have been printed pretty early. It doesn't include the 352 police interceptor engine.
