390/aod?????

I acquired a 72 F-250 4x4 with rebuilt 390 about two years ago. It runs very strong. I've used it as work truck on my property mostly. When used on moderate road trips I realized what horrible gas milage I was getting (7-10). The truck is developing other issues which I really don't want spend money on.

I'm thinking putting the 390 into a mid 50's ford sedan. Does anyone know of an adapter or other method mating an AOD to this motor. Though not preferred I'd also consider an manual trans. Looking for some better MPH.

Thanks,
Ken

For the cost of the adapter kit ($850) plus the cost of beefing up the AOD to handle a 390 and the Lokar TV cable kit you can buy a lot of gas,FE Fords do not get good mileage :(just the nature of the beast.Best bet is to swap in a good used 5.0 and AOD combo which should cost about the same as the adapter kit and your mileage should just about double.

thanks for the feedback. I have a 302/AOD in my 54 Ford sedan and am quite happy with it. I don't have much in the truck so I think I'll just let sleeping dogs lie and use it for occasional use on the property and dump runs.

the advice was good, dump the 390, if you insisted on using it find a c-6 auto trans and get a 2:50 to 1 or a 2:75 to 1 rear end out of a big ford, merc ,linc , that way your almost geared the same as an aod trans, you will have enough torque and h/p to run those high gears, most 4x4 run a 3-73 to 1 gear, and the 4 wheel drives use a bunch of gas just to turn all the drive train
