39 ****** vs. 39 gears in a 1936

I would like to give my 36 pick-up a bit more speed and the the transmission slips out of 2nd gear shamelessly and needs some attention anyhow .1939 gear sets are available from a popular vender." Some machining required." So would it be easier to install a complete 39 transmission? Both must have their challenges. Would some of you who have been through this please advise? Thanks.

There should not be any machining required, but the washers and shafts for the 36 will have to be swapped for the 39,s to go with the 39 gears. If you have a good 39 trans just use that with the 36 rear trans mount.

Hey B;... What we have here is a "tooth " count question . ?? your 36 gear box is most likley the same tooth count as any 39 gear box. ie input 16 teeth and 28 on the cluster, and higher gear would be 18 input and 26 on the cluster...that would be higher speed in frist and second gear "ONLY" ( thrid gear ) is direct, or stright through.. The same with your 36 trans or a 39 trans... To get what you want or need...CHANGE THE REAR END GEARS, and taller tires on the rear, ...I am going to gess, your 36 pickup may have 4.11 gears in the differential,,,, look on the bottom center web on the banjo... numbers stamped there, dived the small number in to the big one... maybe 3.78s would be what you want ?? 3.54 would be way to tall for a stock 21 stud. .... OLD...BILL

A lot of it depends on how you shift. If you shift easy, the older synchro set up isn't too bad. If you want the better synchro set up of the 91A & later transmissions, you can put them in there with the right combination of parts. The 16/28 gear set will be more like a passenger car than a pick up but will work in a little truck if you don't haul much.

Mac VanPelt has a good book for building up the old boxes and it has good parts interchangability info.
