39 transmission shift tower

I'm a Model A guy putting in a 39 trans. I've never seen one installed before. I got the transmission together last night. The Model A shifter has a strong spring inside the tower. Does the 39?

Can someone tell me if I have all the parts for the shift tower here?

Yup, looks good from here. Make sure the forks are each in their center detent before bolting the lid down. Insert the lever, then push the small locating pin (not in your picture) through the hole in the top of the tower into the slot in the lever. The washer, spring and two round pieces that hold the lever in place are in the right order. Screw the top piece down onto the tower and you are set.

Thanks, I do have the pin.

A small detail, however to make the post technically complete, there is a leather washer "seal", ( B 7248),that goes on the shift stick first, followed by the thin metal washer, spring etc. It doesn't show up on many of the exploded parts diagrams. The leather is slightly bigger than the Metal washer and is used to keep oil from being thrown up and seeping around the shift lever. However, almost no one does this and any seepage would be minimal. They are easy to make. Others have mentioned about the pin.

does anyone have o0ne of them locating pins,i belive the part #b7221 tryed several large outfits no luck.

You can make the pin out of 1/4" steel rod stock. The length is not critical, just make it long enough to fit into the hole and not fall through. You can also use a cut-off wheel to cut a piece off a 1/4" drill bit. There is no magic to the pin, it just needs to fit well to prevent the stick from rotating. Making one is quicker than trying to locate one.

I did the cutoff drillbit deal on a replacement pin, and it works great. You may want to make the pin a hair longer than stock if your arm is worn. Also check to see if the slot in the arm is deformed. You can tap the deformed part back into shape a bit to remove some of the slop.

As for the leather seal, the one I bought from a trans parts supplier was a little too small on the OD. Maybe you could find a seal from another source, but make sure the OD is larger than the washer and actually seals against the tower's insides.

When you are removing/replacing that pin mentioned above, be very very careful that this pin does not fall into the transmission box. It can sometimes be a royal PITA to get it back out and if left in the box could do some wicked damage to the gears. Don't ask me how I know this. :o
