39' Topload trans question

I have a fully rebuilt 39' Ford trans in my AV8. I got the thing in gear some how (stick wasnt completely installed). Anyway Ive been messing around with it for a hour trying to get it back to neutral. Does it need to be in neutral for the stick to be properly installed? What Am I doing wrong?

Pull the stick (shifter assy.) back out. Look into the top of the trans case and make sure both SLIDERS are in their respective NEUTRAL positions. Make sure the shifter assembly is also in NEUTRAL. Carefully slide the shifter forks back down onto the two sliders in the trans......simple. Let us know how it works-out. DD

I did the same thing once. Discovered I had put the shafts in the shifter housing in the opposite positions from where they belong. The indents can't line up with the detents. Had to play with shaft positions to get things apart, reassembled per Mac's instuctions and everything worked good.

Hope it's something simple like that!

Neutral is the best reference for stabbing the forks so Yes, must be in neutral. The problem with an overhauled unit, the slider & syncros don't like to shift easily unless the input can be rotated. If it is already installed then that can complicate things but you still have a clutch you can release or have someone else help when aligning the forks with the synchro hub & slider gear.

If it is in two gears, be careful. I moved the low reverse and it chipped a tooth due to the helix. MOVE the SYNCHRO to get it free.
