'39 sedan rear fender patch panel??

I recently bought "front of the rear fender" patch panel for the right side of my car. After I already had it welded in I noticed it was short. I thought the difference was due to the damage on the old fender. I measured the other side and it measured 6 " from the running board mounting area to the fender lip. The patch panel measured 5". I know I should have checked but now it looks like I need a good template of the left side so I can make the right side correct. Has anyone been through this before? Thanks in advance.

Hi funrunr, and thanks. I think the template idea is a good one. A guy here in town has a '40 sedan also. I can run over there and check his out. Thanks very much for the offer.
