39 PU kingpin shimming & endplay dimension

What kind of endplay should I expect between the front spindle kingpin boss and axel?

I have new kingpins, bushings, etc and would like to re-assemble the front axel. There is considerable endplay when the parts are dry assembled but none of the books I have give any dimensions for what is acceptable or needs shimming.

What are you referring to as end play? Up and down movement of the kingpins? They are retained by the tapered bolt (spindle bolt locking pin) that goes through the axle. The kingpins should be a fairly snug fit, if not the bushings need to be replaced and then reamed to the proper fit. There are shims to get the proper fit between the axle and the spindles.

The clearance between the parts where the scribe is pointing. I couldn't post this photo before. The Side shown has .010" the other side feels pretty good with just .004".

One more thing, I am planning to install the bearings with the the cover so the Side shown as it hangs on the zerk is down just to keep water out. Any reason I shouldn't?

and another: how much does the tapered bolt tighten the fit of the kingpin in the axel? In a perfect world I'd like to see the fit in the axel tighter but I don't live there...

They are shimmed to feel. There should be no up/down play and a slight drag as you rotate the spindle. It would not be uncommon for the shim(s) required to be different from one side to the other.

Shimmed to feel-I can work with that. Thanks!
