'39 or 'early '40 pickup spare tire mount

Did early 40 use the same setup as a 39? I did not think that 40 used the wide 5, making the spare mount flange different.

You're right, the '40 did not use the wide 5. It has the standard 5 1/2 inch bolt circle. I'm just learning about these vehicles. My '40 has the hole in the running board and the bracket on the frame for the '39 mount (and the indentation in the fender). The previous owner bought a new repro bed and painted it nicely. Problem is, he forgot to weld on the spare tire mount, so rather than mess up a nice new paint job, I am hoping I can make the '39 mount work. What do you think?

I don't know. I thought the spare on a 40 mounted to the bedside and the mounts were attached to the bed itself. If the hole is in the runningboard, I can think of no reason you could not use a 39 spare mount rod, but I do not know which year flange you would need for the wheel. The 35 pickup flange might work, as might the entire 35 pickup spare tire rod and flange. The 35 is a one year only rod. The 35 used a 16 inch wheel with a 6:00 or 6:50 tire, which should mean the 35 pickup carrier would be tall enough for spare tire clearance on your 40. What might cause a problem is that the 35-37 runningboards have a recessed diimple for the spare. The 38/9 board had a much shallower dimple. The 40 board may not work well with the spare tire rod if it has no recessed dimple.
If you email me at scardilla77034@yahoo.com and give me a phone number, it might be easier to talk about it. I have both 39 and 35 spare carriers here and with a few measurements/pictures, maybe we can come up with a solution. I am in SC, so we have the same time zone. Mike up in MA is working on a 39...lives fairly close to Cape Cod...he might be able to help, also.

Wow!

Looks like you took part of the frame with it! I've been talking to two other folks. If either of those fall through I will get back to you.

Thanks for the photo.

I too am fabricating a 39 style spare mount for my 41 pickup. Several issues. First the plate where the spare bolts is a "wide five" so you will need to fab a plate to accept your wheel or use a wide five wheel from a pre 40. Next you will need to decide whether you want to stabilize the assembly by bolting it to the bed side. I have both pieces and the template I made (wood) to convert the wide five. $200.00 gets the whole thing shipped to the lower 48. The base is pitted, but can be filled and the top is very nice. Good Luck!!

Thanks, LJH;

Dean is helping me out with this. It's really great to have this level of support from the Fordbarn forum. It's what makes this hobby so much more fun!
