39 Mystery Leak

Thanks ! I wondered if I could see it much more touch it from above.. nothing like a challenge! We are leaving on a short cruise in the morning. (Bahama from Port Canaveral) all I will be thinking about is getting that darned thing back together. Can't wait to get back in the barn. What the heck do I use for a pin? finishing nail ? LOL

Me - I would pull the transmission and go through it. If the cluster shaft is sticking out 3/4", then it is my guess that the case has been taking a heck of a load in the rear area (and the shaft has been 'pushing down' with the front of it unsupported). The case shaft hole is most likely wallowed out and who knows what shape the thrust washers are in. Also, think about the potential for a damaged/cracked case, screwed up thrust surfaces, damaged gear teeth, etc.. In my mind, it is a bit risky to somehow knock the shaft back in (which I think will be difficult to get the lock-pin holes aligned) - as well as the shaft aligned with the front of the case. . . and then drive it any distance and feel 'safe' doing it.

He may very likely need a new case (and other internal parts) - or have to have the case bored out in the shaft area and 'sleeved' back to the correct shaft bore size.

Those front bores have been known to crack so I'd want a look at it myself. They make bore scopes that would fit in through the inspection cover port put I don't know how well one would work plus they aren't cheap either.

Bummer.. The upholsterer glued the felt to the floor. Then glued the carpet to the felt. Took me an hour to get the stuff cut away enough to get the floor panels off. Trying not to destroy the carpet. After removing the shifter, I couldn't do anything to get that Shaft started into the front hole. I could barely see the front gear and could not see the washer. Tried to put a .032 wire under the shaft and pulled upward to "maybe' push the washer(unseen) upward to allow the shaft to align. Didn't work. Short of having the transmission on the bench, I have no idea how I can get that damn shaft where it belongs. I have a new pin. Tomorrow I will begin the rear removal. By the way. When I get to that point,.. how is that pin secured? Loctite? Damn, Ain't This A FUN HOBBY!:D

OK I bit the bullet today. Removed the rear end, front seat and remaining floor boards. Removed the transmission and got it on the bench. Had a devil of a time getting the washer/spacer lined up and the shaft back in place. I was just about ready to give up. I couldn't see the hole because of the clutch shaft. I was reluctant to take any more parts out due to the Motors Manual warning that bearings can fall out! I got that pin out and removed the clutch fork and then I could see it. I played with it through two cups of coffee and VIOLA! success. At this point it's back in the car and I am fighting the U joint. Took me 8 hours to get it out, fixed, and back in. Many more left hours to get it all together. Glad I bought not only the missing pin but the clutch fork pin as well. I needed it! All of this was unplanned. it came here because it was spitting water out of the radiator on acceleration.. You guessed it.... low compression on a couple adjacent cylinders. I'll get to that later.
thanks for all the input guys..Dave
