39 gearbox

Guys:
My Father converted his 28 Model A to Hydraulic brakes and changed to 39 Ford front suspension and gearbox. My question is about the adjustment screw and locknut on top of the box. Is there an O ring or seal to keep the heavy lube from leaking out the top of the box or is it a built in vent area. I am trying to get it finished and just discovered the leakage today. I may not be describing the problem exactly, if it would be easier to figure out the issue, please call me at 614 309 1513. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think your box is just overfilled. The level sholud be below the level where it would run out. It vents out the hole in the steering shaft. There are no seals on the adjuster plug.

Another option on a steering gear box is use of a thixotropic grease (flows with motion and gelates at rest) like John Deere Corn Head Grease as the lubricant. SAE 90 gear lube will stay in there if your seals/gaskets are good and light switch/horn wire tube is intact.

Put in the John Deere Corn Head Grease as Rotorwrench described - did it on my 32 Ford and all leaking issues are resolved (and it steers just fine).
