Gentleman, i have a stock 39 Ford standard. I am starting to restore it and would like to go with a open driveshaft rearend. The car still has the original rearend under it and is back in the corner of the garage where i cannot get to it. I would like to know what the width of the rearend is, from drumto drum where the wheels bolt on. Can any of you gentleman help me with this? I bought this car in 1963 and drove it for a couple of years and have been buying parts every since. Thank You Marv

It's not too difficult or expensive to convert the old banjo to open drive. That is unless you are planning some serious horses tugging at it. Of course you will also need to bone it up to the frame if you use the single buggy spring suspension or coil springs or what have you.

Thankyou gentleman for your replies. The reasons for replacing the banjo rear is i want to have disc brakes and i do not need the excitement of watching my rear wheel passing me when a axle breaks. When i was driving the car i was running a 200 hp Buick engine and i am sure at this time i will be a lot less aggresive with it now. I have never had a problem with a banjo rearend in my younger days, just axles and transmissions. I know it is not real smart to use the old trans but that is what i was using when i was a kid and from general looks i want it to look stock. I am using the speedway adapters to use wheels with original hupcaps. Thank you Marv
