39 Ford pickup question

Does any one have a solution for a leaking windshield in the 39 PU. Every time I'm caught in the rain my under dash gets wet. Frank

Do you have a good gear on the crank? Did you replace the gasket? Is the windshield aligned properly? Then do what I do: holes in the floor board to let the water out.

Frank, I have heard many people complain of this problem on the 39 model cars and trucks before. The only effective solution I have seen work so far is to seal up the windshield and not crank it open.

Seth: I was afraid of that. I thought about using a silicone grease? Kinda nice to have the air flow in the hot weather.

I am going to try mine out when finished with out sealing it up. I agree it is nice to have the air flow in the summer. Maybe someone else will have a better idea.

Nice to know about the problem w/windshield. When I get my cab back I will seal the area good. Guessing it may be a leaking cowl vent, when I pulled my vent assemby @ teardown that had the most orange wet rot.

Have you checked that the rubber drain tubes that fit over the 2 steel tubes (1 in each corner of the w/shield opening) are there, or not perished/blocked? And that they go all the way down to the bottom of the cowl? Also check that the 'trough' that runs around the cowl vent (beside the rubber) is clear of debris, and is not rusted thru.

I put 1/8 X 1" sticky on one side foam around before closing it. You can't see it, it stays put and no more rain water under the dash and on the floor. Don't stretch it when you put it on or it won't stay. Use the black type. It has a new gasket but that didn't seal. G.M.

In addition to the suggestions already posted (the one about the drains being very important), you have some up and down adjustment where the hinges attach to the body, and you can shim under the hinges a little if needed. Also, there is a little bit of adjustment where the regulator mounts to the cowl. Broken teeth on the regulator gears can contribute to them leaking, of course the reason the teeth are broken is because somebody was trying to close the windshield tight enough to stop it from leaking, and the gears in the regulators are pot metal and break easily. '37 and '38 regulators are the same, '39 is unique, but cars and trucks use the same regulator. Good idea to pack the regulator mechanism with some wheel bearing grease.
