'39 Deluxe reset tripmeter

It can't be as hard as it seems. My trip meter requires 2-3 turns to crank back 1 mile. At that rate it will take a long time to reset between fills. What am I missing or is something wrong with my speedo?

i think that in an era of directions being --go 2.4 miles, turn left at fork--go 1.2 miles it was useful, now that we have GPS we only use it to keep track of the tank of gas--it's a pain to crank it back 184 miles

Thanks, I just thought there might be some way I was't aware of. I just want it to track fill ups. Seems like too much trouble to me. I guess I'll just use a log.

You mean, you push it in and turn or just pushing it resets it? On mine pushing it in only lets you turn it 1 tenth at a time. I forgot to mention that I replaced the speedo with a '37.

I believe there is something wrong with your trip reset assuming you have a 4 digit reset(1000 mile) ? I am not familiar with 37's but assuming it will read to 9999 then I say there is something wrong .My 33 only reads to 999 so a 3 digit reset(100 mile) and it goes number buy number to rest but the most you would have to go it 50 either up or down to get to 000 . I have a 36 Std gauge that is the same as the 33 so a 3 digit(100 mile) reset but in my 36 3 Window(so deluxe) it has the 4th number so 9999(1000 mile) . Facing the BACK of the gauge if you turn the reset clockwise on the 36 it will grab the next number from right to left that is the same as the first until all 4 numbers read the same and then all 4 numbers will rotate together until you reach 0000 . For Example it would go like this while turning the reset :
4563
4564
4565
4566
4666
5666
6666
7777
8888
9999
0000
This makes it easy to reset . Now in my 39 Deluxe which also has 4 digits it works exactly the same EXCEPT you turn the reset counter clockwise facing the BACK of the gauge . So my assumption would be that all the 4 digit resets(1000 mile) should work like above and the 3 digit(100 mile) resets go 1 number at a time .
Hope this helps , take care , Mike

Mike,
First, thanks for taking the time to explain all that. Mine is just a 3 digit (99.9) miles before it rolls over. It only resets one tenth at a time. If I would have noticed this I would have left the original speedo in the car. Unfortunately it's gone now. The one I replaced it with was just nicer appearance wise. Live and learn.

[QUOT=gkgeiger;476896]I've tried it both ways (forward and backward), it still only resets one tenth at a time.[/QUOTE]
My 36 standard is just like yours. 3 digits for standard, 4 digits for delux.

GENE; Time to open up and that drop of oil. I just ran the reset on four of the several speedos I have, all worked as 1932.V8. said, one way one mile at a time the other way, all back 7777,8888,9999, and 0000 and pull out. ... Once you get it out of the dash, soft pad on your work bench ( its a sitdown job, and a bit of fun too ) un-crimp the stainless face ring, two of the three or four crimps, and lift the ring off. now remove two of the screws from the back of the main can, and the works will come out. I would use a small vacuum cleaner to pull the dirt, dust and wornout oil and grease, someone may have put in at some time or other ?? Be very gentle with the vacuum, don't use a strong blast of air. Your wifes hair dryer works good to, again be gentle blow from a distance. AS; for the oiling I have seen and been told both ways,, soak it dripping wet and or small drops of light weight oil. I like the small drops where I think needed, and some light greese, vasoline (spl?) on the gears, see inside. on some units there is welch plug, with felt wick to be oiled, on the very back of the unit at the cable input, attchment end. You may want to do your cleaning in resevers, ie get it warm first then vacuum and then oil, and heat again ? ? ..As for the oil, I go the a good gun shop, and get what you might use on youn 357 mag, or fishing reel, also thay will have a can of blow dry air. ( if she said no on her hair dryer out in your old shop ) Sorry this is so long, its a fun thing to do. ... just a note; of the 37-39 speedos I have, I have found three different manfacture, Stewart Warner, Walton and unkown ( not marked ) inside or out....OLD....BILL

I believe what Gene is saying is that he has the 3 digit (100 mile) trip meter so from what I see with my speedos everything is working as designed and it will only turn one number at a time, forward or backward . As long as you catch it when it is either above or below 000 by only a few numbers it is no big deal to reset it . I usually will go 125 to 150 miles on a tank of fuel so when I reset mine it will make my fingers sore . I am in the process of getting my fuel gauge fixed to relieve my fingers :D
I would say a good project for Gene would be to find the right speedo in nice shape that has the 4 digit (1000 mile) reset and install it . This will fix it and we all need more projects .......... right ????????

Hi,
i understand that one should set an early model a trip meter when the car is at rest, otherwise the gear teeth, etc. Will be damaged. Any comments on this?

Our experience with the '36 was the same: 3 wheel odometer has to be reset one mile at a time. The 4 wheel can be rolled backwards to collect the digits and stop at 0000.

GEAN: lets try this again... go on e-bay and do a search for 320959300395, it a 37 deluxe speedo, for $65.00 $$ waaaaaay to much $$ with parts missing ( the needle its self ) if you don't care to know how fast your going, it will give you the trip miles you want. a FOUR diget trip odometer. its a nice looking unit and up for bid for the next 6 hrs....wait it out and make the seller an offer, like $30 or $40 total, for something went no bid for 10 days... You will need to open the unit you have and this new unit make "" a good to go unit ""...I'll make instrument tech out of you yet. .. go for it. ... if you haft to send it out, you have parts to trade, always a good thing .... hugeal: I can't say on all early speedos. the 37 /39s is all I have to look at, That said when you push in the trip reset, shaft, you diesengaze the drive gear from its drive, so moving or not, should not matter ?? .... so how do you do this ( reset thing ) whille your diving, holding the sterring wheel and hold you beer ???..... OLD....BILL

Old Bill Use your wife or girlfriend for the resetting, but be sure to pay attention to your driving while she is doing this. heh heh he

I do realize my mistake by replacing my Deluxe speedo w/std and will look for a good replacement. thanks for all your help.
