Changing the thermostats in my 39 Coupe and found them jammed in the radiator hose. What keeps the thermostats in place?

Thanks

I use a second hose clamp to keep mine from flipping.

I have the same set up you do.

As a back up, I have the Shewman type thermostats as replacements just in case. When my current ones fail, then I'll put in the Shewman parts.

I drilled a tiny hole in 2 sides of the stat and the water outlet and wired them down with stainless wire

Original 39 hoses had a step built in which kept the thermostat in place,

To be clear, I’d call it a flare, rather than a step. The smaller diameter of the hose flared up to the diameter of the head outlet, which prevented the stat from moving into the hose.
