38 transmission question

Mart....you've hit on an issue that has frustrated us for some time. The usual aftermarket snap rings for the front and rear snap rings are TOO THIN. Typically they are about .062-064" thick. The originals are about .075-078". We were finally able to get a ring mfr to make a batch @ .075" thick. Makes a great difference controlling the end play of the main drive gear and the mainshaft. We now stock them as B-7026B and 51A-7070B.

Ok, since we're talking about replacing good ol' USA parts that don't appear to be broke with Asian parts that may or may not be of similar quality, let me ask this. The transmission seemed fine prior to this thrust washer coming apart. It didn't make noise, didn't pop out of gear on downhill grades, and shifted as good as one might expect. The main ball bearings seem tight and are USA made. The gears all look good and are not chipped. Other than the three chunks of thrust washer there was no noticeable metal in the bottom of the case. My inclination is to replace the three caged roller bearings, the thrust washers, the seal, snap rings that were removed, the clutch fork pin that I ruined, rebuild the u-joint, and new gaskets. I welcome your comments before I proceed as this is my first ****** experience.

Your call but Why not use the NOS syncro ? Make it an even $20 and I'll throw in the 2 thrust washers :D . They are NOS also .

Oh yea, I forgot about that NOS synchro. Sounds good to me, and you have my address. Sorry for leaving that out of my list.

The pre 39 2nd gears use a separate bronze bushing to spin on. My experience is that this part can wear before other parts so would check to see that the 2nd gear is not wobbly on the bushing. The worn bushing can cause it to pop out of 2nd gear. They can be purchased separately and installed to tighten up the clearance.

I love the personalized packaging on this NOS part provided by a senior member. Hopefully be back on the road soon. Thank you sir!

Just want to thank everyone for their help with my transmission repair. Got the parts from Vanpelt's and other board members, have it reassembled and drove it today. Shifted fine and no odd noises, so I'm feeling better.
