38 Standard hood side panels

It appears there are a couple (at least) styles of the hood side panels for the 38 Standard. This car, Coupe, has two different styles and it is preventing the hood from closing without a gap, on one side. Is there a source for the panels? Why the difference? From the photos below the RH side vents have changing dimensions that appear to continue the grill vent length detail (top to bottom). The LH side has the vents in this area of consistent width across the entire length of the vents. Another change between the two panels is the openings created by the vents, the RH side openings are much narrower that the LH side. The LH side vents are wide enough for a finger tip to pass through the RH side is much smaller. Does any one know of a source for the panels? If you have some send me a PM (Personal Message)

Your left and right panels appear to be the same, however on the right side it looks like it could come down and that would close the gap between the lower grille and the side panel. Maybe just needs a little fine tuning on fitting.

Hi Terry:

The side panels on my 38 look like the drivers side. Not sure how the other one would line up. I have seen them on e-bay, but not often, sorry.

Terry is right, there are 2 distinct styles of hood sides. Discovered this when doing a '38 Roadster Ute , and I have since collected a number of hood sides in the course of the rebuild to give me a bit of a choice . Only source I'm aware of for side panels would be as used parts from wherever you can find them , so good luck with the search Terry, cheers, Col.

It was usually done because they were not forced to rely on just 1 supplier.
Many parts have just that slight difference.
There were 3 different speedos for 39 deluxes.
At least 2 different 39 standard grille center bars.
etc - etc. the list goes on.

I agree with Ol Col here. Back in those days for Ford, they used many sources for parts. Sometimes they were identical, but normally there were various differences, which makes repo parts (Drake for example) pull their hair out trying to make quality repo parts.

By the way, I need a pair of these hood side panels for my project.

I have a NOS R/H side paanel for a 1939 Standard, that I don't need, and would sell.

The 39 standard is similar to the 38 deluxe ,it won't fit on a 38 standard.Maybe they had a different design, down under?

...nope, the standard panels used here are the same as Terry posted at the start of the thread, and there's 2 different sets of bars/louvers if you like.....one set use a straight series of bars, the other type had straight bars at the front in the area of the radiator, from there back they have a "kick" in them and the bars are slanted more vertical ,closing the gap between them...if that makes any sense. I figured that maybe they were a production change to minimise the rain from coming in through the panels ....who knows?

Where the " kick: starts follows the '37 grille contour fairly closely.
Probably a styling thing from Ford.
I have never seen the straight bars on '38 standard side panels.

swoopNZ: I have posted a photo of the 38 Standard straight bar hood side panel above on my original posting it is the photo on the left. The car has one of each style hood side panel. We would like to replace our right hand side straight bar with a right hand side with the "Kick in the louvers (as shown in the photo on the right).

It seems like the early ones were plain painted and sometime in the production run they made a change to use some evenly spaced trim strips to brighten things up a bit. I wonder if that change had anything to do with the these differences.
