38 Rebuild

Compliments of the season to everyone. Just had my 38 rebored (original 21 stud donk) on start up it run 100%. Retorqued heads after it cooled and run again, noticed a knock which sounded like piston slap, shorted out the leads and isolated the problem cylinder, the knock virtually disappearing once the thing warmed up, Pulled the engine and the rod, found about 5 1/2 thou clearance on that cylinder and some unusual marks skirting the piston skirt on the thrust side.
Of course the machinist swears black and blue the clearances were correct at 2 thou when he bored it. Replacement pistons were NOS the 3 ring domed flavour at 60 over.
Seems to think a piston failure. He has the whole motor back now and I have found another brand new lone 60 over piston luckily.-Anyone had these issues?

Go visit with him and have him show you the bore measurements---if all the bores are the same then it should be the piston---do you have pictures of the "damaged" piston

i had a crankshaft ground for my Citroen, it came back small, i gave the specs to the grinder, i asked 'why'---he said people complain if I make them too tight, anyway it's just an old car---it won't matter

it could have been too tight, got hot and collapsed to be too loose
