38 Pickup Last Questions For Awhile

First of all I want to thank everyone for the help so far. A couple of questions I still need to know. First, did Pickups have plated windshield frames? One of the cabs has a plated frame and the other appears to have been painted.

Second qustion, what sort of clamp holds the battery on the firewall? One has nothing up there to hold it and the other has a farmer installed iron strap welded on. Not even nice looking welds at that. Thanks Rod

The battery sits on a shelf and is held down by a batery top holder with two special bolts that are sort of z shaped that go into the fire wall with the nuts inside the cab. I made mine from carriage bolts and bent them using the dimentions from the green book. It would be a good idea if you got one [green book] they are on ebay on a regular basis. The windshield frame as far as I know was painted. Although on deluxe cars they were chrome. If the deluxe truck was chrome I'm not sure. Hopefully some one will chime in on this point. Frank pkny

Did you clean the paint off the body and frame before you bolted the ground cables on??? They need to be ground off and eletrical grease on the metal to keep a good connection. G.M.

Frank, is that a heater core sticking out below your battery tray. Assuming it's aftermarket, thinking of adding one in my 39

Truck windsheilds were painted unless you have one of the very few specially painted demonstrator trucks that were provided that way from the factory with more accessories than any farmer ever bought.

I have some NOS OEM battery bolts for 37-39 pickups. I might have one of the original type battery hold down brackets, but will have to check. They are a bit different from the other years. There is a bolt that goes through the hole in the battery box into the inside of the cab, I guess to keep people from being able to seal the battery. I can be reached at scardilla77034@yahoo.com

I have about 10 old car battery hold downs in the parts barn, so there is chance if I seen a pic I would know which one it was. As for the bolts, I doubt I have any of those, but anything is possible after 27 years of collecting and restoring A's (I never turn down cheap faltheads either). Trying to see what I have as my daughter wants the 38 pickup, so picking and choosing parts carefully. Hopefully by selling what we don't need from the two I can break even before giving it to her. Thanks again Rod

Thanks for the info. Not enough left to see if the one with the plated w/s had any extra fearures, so best to go with the painted one. Thankfully it is on the one with the nicest of the two cabs, so will not have to change them out for now. Rod

Yep that's a heater after market. works out well exept for the fact that when you need to remove the floor boards you have to take it out, that's a pain. I will post some photo's I took last night. Hope they help. Frank

Ford would put a chromed Deluxe windshield frame in a truck if the customer ordered it that way, since the chromed and painted windshield frames will interchange, but what more likely happened is that, at some time in antiquity, a windshield glass got broken and, instead of taking the frame apart to put in a new glass, a previous owner went to the junkyard and got a windshield frame with good glass out of a Deluxe car.

There's another thing about windshield frames you may not know--'37-'39 frames will interchange, however on all '37 and most '38 frames, the seam where it comes apart to install the glass is at the mid-point on each side. On late '38 and all '39 frames, that seam is closer to the bottom of the windshield frame. This was a running change late in the '38 model year.

I found the correct bracket in the parts barn. It needs alittle repair in one corner. No Z bolrs though. Guesse you can't win them all. Rod

That is what I was thinking also as far as the frmes being changed, just wanted to make sure there was not more to the story. Thanks Rod
