38 Phaeton Horn Button Removal?

I have play in the steering wheel/steering shaft joint, under the horn button. I can lift the spring loaded light switch/horn button about 1/4" and I can see the nut I want underneath if I look through the side....but the assembly needs to come off for me to reach the nut.

Do I pry the horn button chrome out first?? Is there a set screw in the slot under the whole assembly? Please help.

Thanks.

Don't pry on the horn button. The horn button and the shaft for the horn button come out by undoing the light switch at the bottom of the steering column (bail) and removing the parts on the bottom of the horn button shaft. Then the shaft will slide out revealing the steering shaft nut at the top.

No, you are working at ground level. On the end of the steering box there is a gizmo (sorry) held on by a wire....you have to pry the wire up and remove the "gizmo" Then you have to pry off a horseshoe shaped keeper while depressing the spring that is in full view. Then the whole thing will pull up through the steering wheel with the horn button attached. This is a pain, but at least you have a Phaeton, not a closed car, and will not have to remove the steering box so while cursing, count your blessings. I doubt the nut is loose...it sounds like the top tube bearing is shot. I strongly suggest one from Busgard (SP?) He sells on e-bay...a bit expensive, but they are a work of art and you will have a DRAMATIC improvement on your steering effort. just type in the search "1938 steering" Good luck,....Matt in Alameda

Alrighty then...thanks. In we go.

It doesn't feel like a bearing...turn all the way left and at the end there's a little play....turn all the way right and there's the same play back again. No play when driving. Bearing loose in mount maybe, and race shifting?
