I m in midst of a renovation 1937 ford pickup decided to change to 12 volt neg ground im keeping generator just changing it to 12 volt it has upgraded distributor with 12 volt coil the fuel sending unit is 12 v and the bulbs will be changed to 12 volt ie tail /stop light and head lamps. is there any thing else I need to do for the conversion? the starter also addressed . I note there is a resister and one fuse in the dash wiring harness. im planning on adding a small fuse box in lieu of the single fuse but not sure what the resister is doing and if needs to be changed. and if the grouding would need to change anything The ampmeter works on flow may affect polarity?
truck is original except Ive replaced backing plates with 39 and 39 mastercylinder kept mechanical lines for parking thus still appears to have mechanical brakes. motor is 21 stud 4 in merc crank thicstun intake ,dual strombergs and rare cyclone heads with marloy distributer.
any suggestions appreciated thanks

The resistor is a ballast resistor for the original style coil. If you are using a 12v coil you need to know what resistance it is. You need about 3 ohms in the circuit, so a 3 ohm coil with no ballast resistor OR a 1.5 ohm coil paired with a 1.5 ohm ballast resistor (not the original one you noted).

The ammeter polarity needs to be reversed, if it is the loop type the wire running thought it needs to run in the opposite direction.

If you are using an original type ignition coil, be sure it is rewound for 12 volts when converting the system. We have Skip Haney rewind for that purpose. If you are planning to use a round replacement type coil, it is likely it contains a built in resistor, making the original firewall resistor unnecessary For either six or twelve volt systems it is advisable to install fuses or breakers in various branches of wiring. We use pushbutton reset breakers mounted on a small board high enough on the inside of the firewall wall out of sight. Old vehicles almost always have few or no overload protections. The old cloth covered rubber insulation crumbles and can short to ground, at least causing problems, at at worst case setting your car on fire! Be sure to install a master battery cutoff switch to guard against burning down your garage! Cheap and effective "insurance".
