37 engine with a babbitt crank. Walt

This is the second one of this set up I've had in over 50yr's. I stripped a 37 engine yesterday, had a surprise when I removed the main caps. It had a 32-35 crank with the 2in. mains. The bearings were about 1/4in. thick so to fit the 2.398-2.399 crank housing bore. I think Ford made these bearings durring the war so you could use the 32-35 crank in the 36LB-37-38 block. I doubt if you can find a set .010 bearings like these. I do have a spare 37 crank I've had for yr's, will probably use it in the engine. how many people have seen this set up? Walt

Walt, there is a guy on E-pay that regularly advertises those special bearings. Usually he only has the rear main bearing. he has them in .010

Walt---In my 60 years of building these things I have had only one like you describe JR

I had one of those about 30 years ago. Luckily it was standard and I had new bearings. Still have some of those new bearings but I don't think I have any .010.

I got one for next to nothing several years back - the block had frozen and is cracked everywhere. I've kept it under the bench just for kicks.

This crank has never been ground but is .005 under so will have to go to .010 luckly I have a 37 crank that will clean up good. These bearings are good wall art. Walt

Walt, I got into this years ago on a V8 60. Same deal small shaft in a big bearing bore, an old ford mech told me that the factory rebuilt engines sold at the dealerships had a hodge podge of parts so that everything could be mixed and used. Ford made special stuff. And yes it is almost impossible to get the undersize you need today. Couldn't get them back in those days either. Hope this helps.
