37 dump truck, gas filler pipe remove

A friend just bought a 37 Ford dump truck, Nice truck, been restored 20yr's ago, been setting in a barn 20yr's. Gas tank full of rust and gunk. Wants to know how to remove the gas filler neck so he can remove the tank. He says it looks like a big nut with slots around it where it screws into the tank. Is that correct? Does it unscrew with some kind of a spanner wrench? Thanks Walt

My 34 pickup is the same, I kept soaking it with penetrating oil for several days & used a brass drift and a hammer and it broke loose, you will probably have to replace the lead gasket that goes between the flange and the tank when you reassemble. Hope it works for you.
