37 axle to radius rod bolts

Sometimes called perch pins. Previous owner changed these and they won't let me use the shock absorber link. I found a pair of NOS perch pins and I am in the process of changing them with the axle still on the frame. I have a spring spreader to keep the spring where it belongs. Someone told me that I will have to have the pins pressed out. How have some of you done this?

9 ½ times out of 10 the pins / bolts are rusted in and are very hard to get out with the assembly out of the car ….. next to imposable in the car.

If your talking about using the lower shock mounts commonly used on street rod type stuff you need to use the long bolts / pins / perch’s they sell with them … stock 37’s will be to short.

If the previous owner changed the pins they may come out very easy. Soak them good with a good penetrating oil and they should come out using a good hammer and punch.

I'm hoping I can change the pins with the axle still under the frame. Been soaking with penetrating oils and will try again Saturday if I don't have to work in the yard. I am going to install the correct perch pins.

TJ, has a good point. If changed by po, they may not be that tight. Maybe you will be lucky. I have had a mix of very easy to remove and very difficult. The ones that were very difficult could never have been remove with front end still under car.

If a pervious owner changed the pins, they may be much easier to change now. It's the originals that have been in for 70 years that are a bear.

I have a gauge on my press and I have pressed a number of 32 perches out and the vast majority let go at 17 tons. The only 2 that were easier had become loose and egg shaped the holes in the axle. As stated above if they are not rusted in you may get lucky but if you hammer on them and mushroom the ends over you will end up taking the axle out of the car and drilling them out.
I put a hardened nut on the threads that is flush with the end of the perch before I put them in my press.

my press showed 32 tons and with heat before they let go,made a hell of a bang, totally stuffed the bolts but I got the axil I wanted. Use heaps of coppercoat, rescue steel when you do the new ones it will make it easier for someone in 70years time.

It was finally warm enough to work in the garage today. I removed the axle from the frame today, used heat, used the puller I had made. Flipped the axle over and drilled a hole down the middle of the bolt , more heat, more pressure and it still won't come out.
