I tighten it until it stops turning, then it points wherever it wants to

i have the original knob on a shift lever in the photo with the point of the "V" facing forward, which i thought was backwards. i tried to turn it but it's real tight and won't move. so i've been soaking it with liquid wrench for weeks.
now last weekend i saw another old original with it pointing the same way. ???

My "V" is pointing to the 10 O'clock position.
I don't plan on messing with it unless I have to.
