37 21 stud question

I see this motor has no rear main seal but has a slinger instead. Do these motors with slingers only leak and if so how bad, or is there a way to install a rope seal. Little confused here and being a 37 with first year insert bearings, not alot of info to be found. Im sure some of you have dealt with this issue before.

They don't leak. They work fine if you are not creating pressure in the crankcase via worn rings etc. Make sure the breather circuit and vent in the front of the pan are clean and open.
Just an opinion

They can be modified to except a rope seal (not a bolt on type of mod, requires some machine work on the crank). But, as Floyd pointed out, the original slinger will work fine.

great thanks for the quick reply...this motor is getting all new valvetrain and piston rering so hpefully not a bunch of crankcase pressure

Another thing that can be an issue is overfilling the engine oil to the point that it leaks. Not a really big issue, but just something to keep in mind.

36 (Or most of them) had insert mains. Actually insert main engines came out in October 1935.:D

Got the short block going back together and I plan on using an electric fuel pump and want to eliminate the mechanical fuel pump but there is a scoop mounted on top that I assume is to help vacate crankcase pressure. What steps do i need to take and is there anything i need to plug off in the engine internally Thanks Ron

If the engine is truly a '37 it has a vent near the right (passenger side) front corner of the pan.

If your not using the mech pump, you might need to block/restrict the oil passage in the block. The push rod bushing in the block can be installed turned/offset to plug it some. Without the pump rod oil is not restricted and the possibility of low oil pressure can be realized. Lots of different ideas on what or how it should be done.

Search here for more info.

If you want to get rid of that scoop let me know... I might buy it. it's just a breather and not necessary if your doing a block off and a pcv setup.

Well flatjack9 has your answer on that one. I remember being told years ago that you needed to plug it. But maybe that's just for a 8ba? They sell a plug online for this purpose.

There is no hole in the pushrod bushing in this engine, so oil pressure will not be affected without the rod. I wouldn't do anything in case later on you (or someone else) might want to use a mechanical pump.
