Okay guys I have the dash out of the car I want to remove the steering column to clean it up and paint the steering wheel as well can the steering column come out of the gearbox separately what's the easiest way to remove it or should I take the whole thing apart along with the gearbox I'm hoping to do this Saturday morning

In a sedan, you can remove the horn rod carefully without bending it with the steering box in place, although it is easier if you loosen the three attaching bolts to enable the column to drop. Then, you can remove steering wheel and remove the column as you desire.

Ok Yeah column is hanging in there
Dash is out
How does horn remove from the steering wheel
Thanks

Two person job; Unclip the light switch from bottom of steering box. Get a helper to hold the horn button/light switch disc down, whilst you push up the spring loaded spider that operates the light switch and remove the little 'C' clip that holds it in place, then remove spider and spring. Horn rod can now be extracted [carefully, without bending it!]

At the very bottom of the horn rod where it goes in the light switch there is a fork which turns the switch. Put a yard stick or similar flexible thing across the steering wheel to hold the horn button down, if you have no help, and then push up on the fork which will expose a small horse shoe clip. Knock the clip out and the horn rod will then pull out the top. Don't bend it !

Ok so at the bottom of the steering box is were the clip comes out right
I have the light switch out already
I cleaned it up to rewire it

Correct! But you need to push the spider/fork up against the action of the spring to expose the C clip. The entire light switch rod will want to go up too, so you need someone at steering wheel to push against that movement, or get ingenious like Cas suggests.

In addition to all the good advice don't forget to cover your upholstery on the front seat. The horn rod usually has grease on it and one mistake in getting it out can put grease on the upholstery.

No interior what so ever inside
Ok horn rod is removed
I loosed bolt at end of the column to the box
How does the column come apart from the steering box now
The outer column is turning i was pulling while twisting with no luck
I sprayed some pb blaster around there too

The tube is just a slip fit over the female connection on the steering box. Once the clamp there is loose, and the steering lock pin (key) is not engaged it should pull straight off.
They sometimes had a rubber bushing up at the top end that gets rotten and crusty, that may fight a bit, but if you can twist it...it should pull off.

The rubber thingy at the top we like to replace with a wheel barrow bearing, and you will most likely have to drill the head off the "brake away" bolt that clamps the drop to the tube. It'll make sense when you get there
