'36 rumble seat

I've got a '36 5 window. Is it possible to add a rumble seat instead of just the trunk that's there now?

The quick answer is yes, our 36 had a trunk and sometime before my Dad bought it it was converted. I am sure one of the Barners will chime in with details for you how to do it. Nothing like riding back there, tons of fun!

I have done several of these '35-'36 conversions. If done right you can have something that will be better than an original! Sent you a PM.

Tom , can you share any info of how to do this please ? As I want to convert my trunk into a rumble seat , I already have the hinges & seat cushions .
Thanks
Cheers
Tony

The simple answer is you need to get a set of the rumble hinges and flip the deck lid around and start looking for a seat and brackets.

Django, what doyou mean by "flip the deck lid"?
does it fit on 180°?
mine is a rumble but was originally a trunk... and the lid doesnt fit quite right...
maybe this is the reason?

I'm in need of the lower raingutters and latch to convert mine back to a trunk lid... so if anyone makes the swap and has these left over I would be interested in them...

Thanks
Zach

Hey Zach. Yep, spin it 180°. It could have been smacked and isn't true anymore. Where is it not fitting right?

Guys, the decklid only fits one way. The handle location needs to be cut out and moved , but the decklid is built to allow the latch to fit in both ends. The hinge holes are in place for both the trunk and rumble hinges. Dave

My father converted his 35 5 window in the 80s to a rumble seat. Didn't have to drill out the hole for the handle, just flipped the lid 180. of course you have to cut the rain gutter, bend new rain gutters and install them to allow the lid to fold down and water to go down to the bottom of the tailpan. You will have to find a coupe or roadster to measure the new rain gutters. Dad was lucky that the guy who fabricated and installed the gutters had a 36 roadster to copy.

The simple answer is.....Uncle Buck is right! On many old cars you can simply rotate the trunk lid to make it into a rumble lid but you cannot rotate a '35-'36 lid. The body curvature will not allow it to fit and no amount of bodywork or adjusting will get it to fit.

My dad is wanting to swap his 35 Cabriolet rumbleseat into a trunk. If anyone had a very nice solid trunk set up, he may consider swapping. His car is black.

thanks...
its probably been hit at some point... does have a big dent in it....

but I can tell the car was for sure a trunk car originally due to bolt mark in hinge mounting locations on the actual body at the top....

I'll finally be digging this sucker out and taking it to my own garage this weekend... so maybe some good outside photos are in order before its mothballed again...

thanks
Zach

Hey Zach, check out the new issue of Street Rodder. There is a gorgeous '35 3 window that I know you'll dig.

Thanks!... I saw that one.... I believe it may have been in the last Hop-Up?
I actually bought a pair of 40 chevy headlights because of that thing!
changed plans now...but there they hang, money spent!...haha

Hey Tom
I see you have converted a couple of regular 36 ford trunk lids to a rumble seat . I am getting ready to convert mine and need some info. When i open my trunk lid , both bottom corners have a stop plate (looks like factory original) Will i have to remove them and will i have to remove rain gutters.
