While taking pictures of radio for sale noticed antenna cable from chassis box sticking out with exposed wire, shoved it back in and radio plays loud and clear.
One other problem is I can't change stations from radio head because end of cable going to chassis has come apart, not sure why that would be a problem but apparently it is.

You figured out the antenna, I would put money on it that you can figure this out too. Shine a light in the hole where the cable goes and she if you can find something that would match it. Then just change the station. I know it is an old radio but you might be able to get one of the newer stations. I here there is a new band that has got the kids hoppen and I think the leaders name is Gelnn Miller. Give him a listen.

Insert the cable back into the hole (put some hair around the hole :)) and turn the knob until you feel the cable seat into its slot.

Gonna save myself a little blue pill and explain the situation a little better! After insertion I have no problem engaging the slotted cable end into the peg in the radio; after doing so, and I turn the knob on the radio head the station doesn't change unless I hold the cable end and move the radio head around. Going to try and post picture of the cable end and maybe you can see what I'm talking about. Looks like the barrel on the end of the cable needs to be re-swedged?

When you turn the tuning knob does the needle move? There is a set screw on/inside the radio head also that clamps to the cable, that is how you adjust the needle to show correct on the dial. (if my CRS is not acting up!)
