Hey folks, got a parts ID question for the rear end officianados here.
I have disassembled my '36 pickup rear end. Unfortunately I found it a mess. Most of the bearings and cups are bad, ring and pinion bad, etc.
So my parts book (Ford Chassis Parts Catalogue) shows that the bearings on the differential itself, whose cups are in the inner ends of the axle housings, are supposed to be PN 18 4221 and the cups are supposed to be PN 18 4222.
What I actually found in the assembly is the 18 4222 cup (race) but the bearing is marked 48 4621. Both pieces are stamped with the original Ford script, there is no evidence the rear end has ever been apart before, but these numbers don't match my parts book at all.
48 4621-B is supposed to be the two front pinion bearings and they share a dual cone race.
One of the differential bearings (right side) was so worn the cage nearly falls off and coincidentally that same side has a bad axle seal as well, but I would usually put back what came out, only new.
Can anyone shed any light on this for me? Are the front pinion bearings and the differential bearings supposed to be the same in a late '36 pickup? Or is the parts book correct and somehow someone (Ford or otherwise) slipped in the wrong parts?
All parts are Ford script Timken parts.
All help is appreciated.
Mike
