36 pick up vibration

Check the speedometer gear in the housing of the transmission. It is easy for the gear to go dry. On my '34 with the '36 motor, I had this very problem. Thought the universal joint was gonna come out of it. Or maybe the rear bearing of the transmission. Nope, none of that. Speedometer gear had gone dry. It will put up quite a fuss.

So I got the truck up on lift last night and found that the whole connection point of the u joint to the transmission was a mess. There was a what felt like rubber glob hanging down from that dome that I think holds the u joint. So I figured no sense putting the grease in until this gets fixed. Is it a hard job? Also my steering box was leaking a lot of fluid

The best way is to jack the vehicle in the rear and get some good quality jack stands to hold the frame up. Disconnect your shocks and rear spring from the crossmember. Disconnect the brake components and speedometer drive then slide the whole drive assembly back so you can access the u-joint. take the cap off and clean all the crud out to have a look.

you open your hood two far, there are some notches in the cowl for the hood corners, I hate to see you scratch your hood

Hey, how bout more pictures of the 36 Ford truck ? I did a model of one years ago and had to rely on some kind of fuzzy shots ..........

Corey, you mention a "big rubber glob" hanging down. I can't imagine what that would be. Are you talking about the rubber ball at the end of the wishbone? Perhaps the ball is gone and the vibration you hear is the wishbone moving around, that's an easy fix.

There's a vendor on E-pay that goes by Century-Hotrod that sells an o-ring replacement kit for this u-joint housing. I put one on my '40 and am pleased with it. Seems to seal up tighter than the original cork. Probably easier to pull the floor out to access the coupling.

Do I still loosen the rear end and slide everything back

You know....I just did this job this past weekend. I was replacing my clutch and transmission, so I had everything moved back. Not knowing the condition of your U-joint, I'd say if it's good you don't have to move anything. If you're concerned about it, and thinking it may be causing the vibration, I suggest moving everything back. Replacing the cork seal with the o-ring would not require moving the tube back.
Hope this helps,
Joe
