36 pick up vibration

Hi all, new to the site. I have inherited a 1936 pick up from my grandpa. I have been driving it short distances til I can determine how reliable it is. Had to re do fuel system due to the amount of time it sat. It's running pretty good but I have a vibration somewhere in the drivetrain and was looking for some help. It feels like something is dry but I have checked ****** and rear end and they are good on oil. When I push in clutch it goes away. Any ideas?

Is there a DIY on that. I am a 68-72 guy. I remember all my grandpas t's, A's, and coupes but I'm not familiar with working on them

No the engine runs pretty smooth. When I'm driving it just sounds like something is dry. Kinda like a light vibration or howl

If the throw out bearing is dry it will usually make noise when you push the clutch pedal & not as much the other way around. Could be transmission. When you push the clutch, the countershaft cluster slows down quick in the oil. You might change the trans oil & check for chunks of metal. Everything else pretty much keeps on turning when you coast but the rear axle and sometimes the U-joint can make noise under load. The U-joint likes a semi-fluid type grease like John Deere corn head grease. It was originally designed to have a mix of gear lube with soda soap but that stuff is out of the dark ages. The U-joint just sort of bathes in the lube you put in there. It's not like modern stuff lubed with chassis grease from a grease gun. Chassis grease will just get thrown off and stick to the inside of the housing.

welcome to the 'Barn....hopefully you can get the problem figured out and fixed so you can enjoy your grandpa's pickup.....Mike

The first thing I would try is to grease the "U" joint, it's the easiest to fix. I has a similar situation with a '32 and unfortunately I had to pull the trans and found the needle bearing in the input shaft was toast and it ruined the input shaft also, I don't think the throwout bearing will cause a vibration, but if it's dry you can probably hear it, but hopefully its an easy fix for you.

To post a picture you have to have it hosted somewhere... like youtube so you have a url for it. I think that is the only way to do it here. I would like to see pictures also. I have a 36 I bought in 1969 that I am working on again... a stalled restoration... Just got the engine running.

I post pictures from my computer. Write your post then "go advanced" and scroll down to manage attachments. Click on that and go to browse, you can then click and drag a picture to the browse file and it should show there. Preview your message and see.

I hope you get that vibration worked out, the 36 pickup is fun to drive.

Bill

If the clutch is adjusted properly, the throwout bearing is not touching any moving part when the pedal is released. So if the problem appears when the clutch is not depressed then the throwout is not the source of the problem. Check for vibration with clutch NOT depressed and vehicle in neutral. This will allow the Trans. main shaft to rotate and test the Trans. pilot bearing/bushing and the Trans. front bearing.

Hopefully gonna get some time this week to check it out. Thanks everyone.

Great looking truck.......wish my Grandpa would have passed something like that to me.;)
Let us know what you find out, and good luck.
Joe

Yes very fortunate. Me and all my cousins got to pick vehicle. I also got a '27 roadster pick up. He used to race T's and had everything from T's to a '64 convertible Cadillac. They just had an auction on the 18th. Hard to see a lot of his stuff go. But can't have it all I guess
