I have a 36 pick up on a 39/40 frame it has 4/11 rear gears . can I use the center section of the 36 rear that is 3/78, With the axels and housings from the 39/40. It is geared to low for highway use.

the center section will work. If I remember right 4:11 sets have different teeth on the axles and and spider gears. Believe you could use the the 4:11 axles and spider gears as a set with your 3:78. If I am wrong on this, someone will speak up. Axles out of both rear ends are same lenght.

Banjos interchange '35 - '48.
Axles interchange '35 - '41, but with the correct matching spider.
'35 - '38 axles = 18 tooth; '39 '41 = 16 tooth.
Axle housings interchange from '37 - '40.
Spring hanger width interchanges '35 - '40; '41 - '48

You can swap 35-6 center section with 35-6 center section with 3:78 gears straight out, using the same axles nothing changes but the overall ration. However if you use the later 37-41 center section the pinion spine count will change from 10 to 6 and require you to also change the drive shaft to match, 35-6 are 10 spline and 37 -41 are 6 spline. Also note that although the axles are the same overall length the gear tooth count is different as posted and require you to match the spider gears to the year and tooth count of the axle shafts. Early axles 32-38 use 12 tooth spiders 39-48 axles use the 11 tooth spiders so it is a good idea to count the teeth on the axle shafts before you swap parts and you get funny noises. Lastly if you choose to swap a later 37-48 center section and marry it to early 35-6 axle tubes it requires you to swap out the carrier bearings to the early 32-36 thinner bearing and everything will bolt right up.

I dont think you would have steep hills in Ohio,so why not go with 3.54 gears or better yet,get a Columbia OD. I have Columbias under both my model A,s with 4.11,s & 2.94 in OD.Even with stock A engine, they will cruise at 60 with the 28.5% OD.
