'36 Phaeton--hood bracket color?

Can someone tell me the paint color for the rear hood bracket? This is the small clip at the firewall that holds the aft end of the hood hinge strip. Mine is currently painted with a color I'd call "overspray".

Thanks,

John

I just checked the 35-36 restoration manual and it doesn't say the ones for the 35 are SS/Chrome to match the SS center trim.....I know the front that bolts into the radiator on the 35 uses a 12-24 Oval Slot Machine Screw and it is chrome and I believe the rear is chrome too.

Just checking Joe's catalog and the front for the '36 is listed as zinc plate and the rear as stainless steel. The rear shown is also a little different than the one on my car. On a close inspection, the one on my car looks to be hand made from stainless steel sheet metal.

That would fit with other things I've found that were obviously not Ford parts. The car spent a lot of years in the collection of Dee Howard, who had extensive aircraft fabrication shops in San Antonio. The whole exhaust system is made of stainless steel TIG welded tubing. The fuel lines are also aircraft tubing and AN fittings.

I think I'll order the catalog parts.

My apologies, I must be slipping. The '36 front bracket was originally cadmium plated, not chrome plated (unlike those of the '32-'35 model years). It's only the rear that was chrome plated for the '36s.

Doggone, David. It's getting so hard to find good help...:D:D BTW, where did you come up with that info? Is that personal experience or is there a reference somewhere? I have the 35-36 book, but there is some detail stuff that isn't in it.

Also, thanks to the EPA, it's getting hard to find cadmium plating too.

Thanks again

That's for sure.:D

While I'm pretty sure that the forward '36 bracket as well as the '33-'36 rear bracket show up in the 1936 version of the Ford hardware catalogue, the finish would not be obvious unless painted. Likely I observed some super original cars plus those on the four '36s I've owned over the years as well as some NOS versions that I've had.

Yes, finding an existing source for cadmium plating is real challenge these days as nearly all have switched over to zinc. The proper disposal of the spent chemicals used in cadmium plating is extremely costly and few platers have enough volume to justify the expense.
