hey guys - i am putting together a traditional hot rod / jalopy. (1926-27 crusty model T roadster body on a model A chassis with 51 ford truck flathead V8, 36 toploader 3 speed and 34 or 35 closed rear). i have a set of 1936 (i think) mechanical brakes that i want to use for the rear. i have the backing plates and all the shoes and inside hardware. i don't have the levers that would go on the back of the plates to connect to my brake rods. not even sure what they look like or where they get attched to. if anyone can send me pictures of what the back of the backing plate looks like with the levers and brake rods hooked up that would be a big help. i need to find the 2 rear brake levers as well. anybody have these for sale ? any information, pics, etc. would be greatly appriciated. thanks - john (johnd@dciarchitects.com)

To me it looks more 37-38 cable brakes-- need closer picture of another angle, but it looks like can see end of cable lever and retract spring-- mostly hidden by axle and axle housing

hi kurt - that may be. i am still learing here. you are right, there is a cable but i assumed that was for the emergency brake. is that how 37-38 brakes operated, by a cable and not a rod ?

..........if these are 37'-38' cable operated brakes, has anyone ever adapted them for use on a model A ? think it is possible to operate them with a modified rod ?

one more thought......if i can't adapt the 37-38 cable backing plates and brakes to work with the model A braking system, is it possible to fit my model a rear backing plates, hubs and drums onto my 34 or 35 rear ? i held them in place and they would not fit down agianst the axle flange

Sounds like you might need to do a little research on all of this. I'm guessing that not a whole lot of folks have attempted what your talking about (not the car, the cable brakes to model A cross-shaft). You can hook almost anything to anything but I would ask the question is it worth the effort. Not sure where to suggest you look for answers on this one, maybe the HAMB, maybe the Model A folks?

if anyone can send me pictures of what the back of the backing plate looks like with the levers and brake rods .

I stumbled on this thread while searching for the parking brake levers for a 39-41 juice brake. I just disassembled a 36 rear to use with said juice brakes. Attached is a photo of the levers installed. They are rod actuated according to the parts manual, pn 48-2499. There is only one lever per rear drum. The parking brake lever acts upon the same cross shaft as the brake pedal, so it applies the brakes to all four wheels and simply holds them all simultaneously with the ratchet and pawl at the bottom of the lever. A fellow barner, old bill, recently saved me with a fuel gauge for the cost of shipping. To keep the karma going you can have these backing plates for shipping.
