36 Gas tank source?

I pulled out my gas tank last night after seeing dripping gas from a corner of the tank. The gas was coming from a seam on the end by the filler neck. Probably hard to effectively fix.
So I am thinking about a new one rather than trying to repair the tank.
Any thoughts on a good source for a tank? What about type of construction.
I see there is steel, stainless steel or poly?

Humm..... this may be easier to fix than you think. Since you are considering a new tank you will need to remove the fuel neck. This fuel neck is held to the tank with a screw-in collar. This may be where you problem is. There is a lead washer/seal that is found between the neck end and the tank itself. Your leak may be coming from a deteriorated seal. If this is the case a new one can be purchased from several sources for under $5.

Hope this helps.

Bob Drake or Tanks Inc. are a couple good sources. I prefer the steel or stainless steel over the Poly after a friends Poly tank got punctured on the road by a piece of steel. That could have been a real killer!

I went through this last year, and gathererd a lot of information regarding replacement tanks.

My conclusion?? The best solution is to stay with an original Ford gas tank.

The Drake tank needs modification to accept the OEM fuel sender, and the Poly tank is even less adaptable because you need to either use their adapter ring ($45 I think) or go with their 12v sender. The Poly tank also needs their fuel inlet tube for $25 or so.

I found a good used tank that had already been cleaned and coated. The sealer 'Red Coat' is OK with Ethanol fuels.

One last tip, if you deal with the OEM inlet tube as suggested and you replace the lead washer, I would liberally lubricate the threads on the filler pipe before screwing it onto the tank. I did not do this, and was lucky the threads drew down tight, but in retrospect, it would have been lots easier with lubricant on the threads.

The tank is out and the fuel neck is off. I greased it up when I put it in 10 years ago. It came apart real easy with a spanner wrench. With the tank setting out; I put gas back in.
The leak was not at the neck but gas was coming from the area between the mounting flange and the tank on the end where the two are soldered together. I think I can look inside with a mirror. I suspect that the tank is rusted thin there. This may be difficult to fix. 10 years ago I replaced a section of rusted out skin and sealed the inside with gas tank sealer. The tank looks pristine where I can see through the sending hole.

I looked inside of the tank through the filler opening with a mirror and flash light. The end of the tank inside is pitted deeply near the middle seam and in the area where it is leaking. Even though I coated the tank with sealer I think the metal is too far gone and with the flexing of the mounting flange created a weak spot and leaked through. This area would be real hard to repair since it is in and around the filler opening.
So I bit the bullet and ordered one from Drake today.

I had a tank from TANKS, but it would not fit into my 39 Deluxe without lifting the body up... Sold it to a Barner with a different application, (truck) (at a reasonable price), he said he was quite pleased with it... Karl
