36 fuel gauge

Need to send my fuel gauge in for repair, can I remove just the fuel gauge or do I have to remove oil pressure to as a unit?

it's difficult working upside down, up under the dash....could well be easier to remove complete gauge, then separate the two on the bench.
And, often you'll find it easier to remove the speedo first, it'll give you more room, more light, easier access.

No one has asked: Are you sure it is the fuel gauge?
Since 1936 was the first year for the electric fuel gauge, most of the problems with the fuel gauge are caused by the brass float giving out and that keeps the gauge in the dash from reading correctly.

Have you tested the sender in the tank?

stock sending unit checks good. shorting sending unit wire to ground gives no movement on gauge. Had a short and fire on wiring harness, probably fried gauge

Easier to remove gauge by pulling the speedo and you have room to get in there to pull entire fuel gauge /oil unit out. Then bench test it .I use a regular 9V batt with alligator clips.Just touch the terminals briefly to see if needle moves.Switch polarity if necessary.I have repaired a couple by opening it up which is tricky. There is a super thin wire coiled around a plate. That wire could have been severed. It depends where its severed as soldering doesn't work. There is Member here that might have a NOS as he advertises frequently.
