I would not bother with a '36 steering gear assembly. Contrary to what has been written in this topic about converting to a '37 or later box, the '40 box is also a direct fit into a '36, however, you will need a 37-40 frame mount.
I replaced the steering gear box in my '36 in 1955 with a '40 box and frame mount, I also used a '40 pitman arm #21-A 3590-3 015, The '36 pitman hung down on a funny angle.
I used the '40 column mass jacket because my car has a column shift, I used a '46 steering wheel. The only modification required was to remove the steering wheel lock ring from the steering shaft and put a slight bend in the lower edge of the dash to accommodate the '40 steering drop.
The '37-40 steering gears in a '36 make the car drive like it has power steering compared to the '35-36 fixed sector shaft..
I have a good '36 steering gear box that came out of a station wagon.
