I have a 36 box. On the end of sector shaft there appears to be something missing. All I have is a clip. There should be a large cap but whats under the cap? I should say what am I missing? The box moves smoothly. Thanks

Does this help any?

Are you talking about the bottom of the steering box where the horn/light switch rod comes out??? If so, please see included drawing of the light switch assembly.

Don - in the picture you supplied - where the electrical conduit enters the "can" - is that waterproofed with sealant or similar?

Peter, I'm not aware of any sealant in that area. There is an asbestos sleave that covers the wire bundle coming out of the "can" to protect the wires from the heat of the exhaust manifold crossover pipe.

WOW that's an eye opener.I have this electric switch with the spaghetti wiring that came with the car. I wasn't sure what it was for. It looked like it was missing the knob or key that turned it. This clamps to the bottom of the steering box? Talk about a can of worms. If so how does the switch get get rotated?

By a rod that goes up the steering column. There is a selector on the center of the steering wheel. The positions/functions of the selector are shown on the wiring diagram (the lighting switch diagram is a 35 but similar to a 36). Your wire harness to the bottom of the steering box should look something like the one posted, except old, covered in grease, faded and brittle LOL. There are four positions on the lighting selector switch: OFF, PARK, LOW BEAMS, HIGH BEAMS. Per the wiring diagram, you also get power to the STOP LIGHT switch and to the INSTRUMENT LIGHT switch and power to the TAIL LIGHT(S) in any position other than OFF.

On the diagram that JSeery posted, you can see the horn button/light switch (#3616) this has a rod attached to it that goes all the way down the steering shaft and comes out the bottom of the steering box. At the bottom end of the rod there is part #3644 that engages in the switch on the bottom of the steering box. When you turn the middle of the steering wheel, it turns the switch on and off. When you push the horn button, it pushes the rod down and connects the horn contacts in the switch. The rod going down through the steering shaft has to be very straight and clean of any old grease. If it binds in the steering shaft, your lights will turn on and off when you turn the steering wheel and your horn will stick on. The switch is held in place on the bottom of the steering box with the wire bail. Part #3647. There is an alignment notch on the steering box and the switch housing.
