36 Ford rear brake drums

When pressing new grease seals in rear brake drums should the seal be
pushed in until the metal portion comes into contact with the outer metal
portion of the wheel bearing? What is the correct starting location on the
axle for the key to be located before installation of drum. Should rear drums
be torqued and, if so, to how many foot pounds? Before reinstalling my speedo
gear on the torque tube should I fill the inner portion with grease or gear oil?
Thanks for any answers to my questions. I'm very close to being able to take
my humpback out for a test drive after spending most of the summer changing
the original 4.11 ring and pinion to a 3.78.

the seal only has to go in far enought to clear the snap ring groove in the hub so you can install the snap ring. if you press it in until it stops that should be good also. the bearing has to have some end play and should not be in constant contact with the seal. apply a small amount of grease to the seal area on the axle housing.
Get the axle key seated so it looks bottomed on the axle make sure the key ways on the axle and the hub are clean, the key should fit tightly in the groves.
You should be able to torque the axle nut to 200 ft/lb and then continue to tighten until the cotter pin fits.
You don't have to fill the area of the speedometer gears but the drive shaft bearing inside has to have lube and the worm for the speedometer and the speedo turtle gear and shaft all need a bunch of grease. I usually put a bit of grease on the drive shaft spline and lube the bearing before installing. so that everything in this area has some lube then grease through the zirk on the U-joint cover.

Thanks very much Terry for all the good info. Tomorrow I should be able to
get drums reinstalled, wheels and tires put back on and finally lower the old
girl back down onto the garage floor. Maybe some day next week I'll be able
to take my first ride of the season.
