i'm rebuilding my 36 seat and have some questions about some things. for some reason I can't post pics anymore. anybody have any pics of just the seat bottom wood? there are two radius cut into the back wood and two slots cut into those radius's. without pictures it's very hard to convey. to me they don't seem to do anything. also on the front and back rails there are holes drilled that don't really need to be there either. 6 in the back rail, 5 in the back. i'm trying to get these done so they can be dropped off at the upholstery shop.

no one? i'm cutting wood Monday, i'd sure like to know if I can leave out those two rear curved indentations at the back corners. i'm making the seat bottom and back out of 3/4" Baltic birch, instead of pieced together. the seat back is pieced together as original, but made of maple. all will be painted black. boy I wish I knew why I can't post pics anymore.

Perhaps you need to resize files to smaller size to allow to post.
This has been my case several times. Frustrating.

The notch is to clear the rear seat track stud; not sure on the semi-circular cut-outs or the reason for the holes.

rich b. just what i'm looking for. did you happen to notice the back spring wood has an arch to it? I almost missed it, I thought the wood was warped, then I measured on the two ends, then the middle. 3/8" taller in the middle. so it sounds like you're not sure about the curves, but the other area hogged out is for seat track bolt clearance, right? heavy handed way to do it if you asked me. i'll probably omit the eleven small holes on the front and rear rails as they would seem to weaken the wood for no good reason. thanks for posting this info. I hope others will join in if it's not to much trouble. kurt.

I believe that the holes in the seat bottom frame are there for the same reason that they were put in the chassis......to lighten the body weight. Quite common in the aircraft industry.

yes, I thought of that, but what could 11 1-3/4" plugs weigh? I metal - I get it. but wood?

boy I wish I knew why I can't post pics anymore.

Anytime you have any photos to post you can email them to me and I can post them for you. I can also take a look at them to see if there is any obvious reason they won't post as they are.

Here's a couple of pictures of the seat bottom of my '36 3W. You'll note that the (2) countersunk holes in the wood frame, line up with the holes in the metal seat frame. The holes are for the bolts that secure the seat adjustment mechanism and the counter sunk cut-outs in the wood frame of the seat are for clearance.
Hope the pics help. If you need any other pictures or info, please let me know.

this is good info. the main thing i'm wondering about is the two curves in the back rail and the second cut in the middle of the curve. rick b. said that was to clear the seat track stud. still unclear about the curve though. project got put on the backburner till after the 4th due to a family gathering. i'll pick it up after the clean up. happy 4th to all that live in the states.

The holes maybe for better air transfer as the cushion is depressed & rebounded. A seat cushion assembly setting on a relatively flat surface can have a bellows affect if air can't move in and out very well.

The U shaped cut outs may be for clearance of the seat back attachment. In any case, I'm sure they were put there for clearance purposes for some application.

I doubt that they're for air/ rebound etc. the center is wide open. as far as the two curves, the only thing that makes a little sense (to me) is a way to grab or lift it out. but even then you could lift it out from the front.

Took the seat bottom out of my coupe today; kinda looks like the cut-outs may help keep from snagging the upholstery on the track studs when taking the lower cushion in and out; at least the way I go about it.

well now that I can post pics again i'll show my seat with new wood almost ready to go get stitched-up.

thanks for the nice comments and help with this part of the project. now I've got to get the old 21 stud engine out, repair the firewall, (battery tray mod), and get it ready to install the new 59ab/t5 that will go in. I doesn't sound like that much, but when you're a force of one it can take awhile. i'll post pics of the firewall repair when the time comes.
