36 Convertible back

Hi guys. My 36 convertible is back together with its electric fan, and the grill and front and splash aprons are all where they are supposed to be. Thanks for all the help. Appreciated. Car ran over four hours in 95 plus weather fourth of July. Still heats up a little. Does anyone have a six blade fan for sale? Also was told by a fellow in Sacramento and the Ford museum to use regular water without anti freeze in non preasure system. True or not?
Thanks, Chuck

A six blade fan is not going to help you on the road, only in traffic. It will make a lot of noise too. That is probably not your problem. Like most all old FORDS, it is probably your radiator being plugged.
MIKE :)

I run water with some water pump lubricant/rust inhibitor in all our Flatheads. In Tampa we don't usually have to worry about freezing temperatures...

Thanks guys. Radiator removed, power flushed, boiled, and repaired. Entire cooling system power flushed 2 years ago. Car does not boil over. Runs hot, temp guage goes over the top. Engine then vapor locks. Did not do this until heating issue started. Only does it in very hot weather (heating and vapor)

Heating seems to be key. With new electric fan, much improved but still utlimately gets hot and runs bad. Takes much, much longer now. Most of my driving is in city, urban area.

Six volt tractor coil installed two years ago, new fuel pump diaphram and carb overhaul and fuel line blow out two years ago. As long as temp stays in the 3/4 range, car happy.

Thanks, Chuck

I had a six blade fan on my '35 and took it off due to the noise problem that Mike mentioned. The Skip Haney water pumps and over flow pressure release valve have solved my cooling problems. I drove all over the Concord-Charlotte, NC area in 100*+ temperatures and 600 miles in Vermont and New Hampshire last week and had no cooling problems. J.M.

I was having foaming problems,so decided to run straight water and water-wetter. I flushed system 3 times ,then added water that I know is low in minerals. I let the car idle on an 85' day until temp stabilised then added 1 bottle of ww and temp dropped about 8' and no foaming.
I saved the antifreeze for next winter.

Chuck-

From my experience the stock temperature gauge on '35-'36 Fords with its' red fluid indicator seems to have no relationship to the actual temperature of the engine. If you haven't already done this try a thermo-gun on the engine to see what the temperature really is when the dash gauge reads hot or add an accessory gauge under the dash that has a known reliability. You might be surprised!

Hp[e this helps.

36 6 blade fans are hard to find and you have to watch the length of the snout there were diff lengths.I have one on my coupe slightly noisey but my hearing is bad anyhow,so i dont hear it too much,LOL ken ct. There found on most PU trucks.

my 36 truck with my fresh 35 21 stud motor it would run about 140 deg at about 80 deg outside.
it has not been that hot hear. on tuesday i drilled 5/8 holes in some brass freeze plugs, and put thim in the water pumps.
so far it seems to run about 165 deg. and it has more water in the radiator, it dose not puke it out

I had a 36 (what else?) cabriolet that occasionally wanted to stumble due to the onset of vapor lock. I turned on my elec fuel pump for a mile or two and then turned it off.... stumble and vapor locking went away. The goal is to RIDE!

It worked for me. I only used the elec pump to prime carb after sitting for long period and when it got hot and started to stumble from vapor locking.

Hope this helps, Al

Hey Al-your favorite fan here (pun intended). You had both vacuum AND electric fuel systems working at the same time. How do you do this?

Thanks, Chuck

Thanks so much. I think my lawyer has one (he is also my automotive AC expert and my friend since 6th grade-long story I won't bore you with). I will try it and let you know.
Chuck

Just being here makes it look good from any side. Thanks, and I may try that. The guy from the museum also said that these radiators eventually just stop cooling effectively, and recommended doing the water and oil thing. I will have to add antifreeze back into the mix in the fall, like you do.

Hi Chuck,

The mechanical pump will pull gas through the electric pump when it is off and the elec pump will push gas through the mech pump if it quits as long as the fuel flow route through the mech pump is intact.

How do I get them both to work? I turn the switch on to the elec fan.:D:D

I still have great memories of us tooling around Smithfield together. My new "Miss Smithfield" is a bit more modern than the last... please forgive.

I see the judge and Miss Florine regularly... great folks.

Chuck's convertible is the one on the left. Really neat car! Columbia, too!

Skip's pumps and the 3 lb ckvalve cured the blue 36 conv's cooling issues as the radiator in excellent shape until I knocked a hole in it..another story! Without the ck valve, it tended to push water out the overflow pipe; even parked after a run. The 6V elec fan cured the parade heat issues.

I always run anti-freeze and include water pump lubricant if changing water.

Keep working, BUT... be COOL!:)

Al

Thanks to all who responded, and thanks to Al as always. Thanks for the updade on Bill and Florene. I need to come pay them a visit-and you. We just got back from Wisconsin visiting a relative "before its to late", so that kind of shot the vacation buget-but it was worth it.

Can you guys tell me more about where to find Skips products, and what they intail for installation? This sounds exactly like what I need. Also, what kind of fuel pump did you use, Al?

Sorry for not posting sooner. Had to take Annemarie to an Irish Dance final this weekend. She did not place, but gave her all.
Thanks again,
Chuck

Chuck, To read about Skip Haney water pumps and coil rewinding go to this website http://www.fordcollector.com/ and click on the appropriate headings. He also makes and sells a pressure release valve that fits on the radiator overflow tube that has worked very well for me. I don't see any ads for this item on the website but if you call Skip he will fill you in on details about the valve and sell you one for $25.00 + S&H. I have no business connections with him, just think his products are great and well worth the money. J.M.

I used a 6V cylindrical elec fuel pump from Mac's Auto Parts as I recall. You might be able to get one at your local AutoZone that sells 12 V AirTech pumps. They may offer a 6V version that can be ordered. Al

Thanks Al, J.M, Ken CT, Brian, Tom, Brendan, Mike. Car ran in 90 degree weather and did not boil. Temp gauge went to top as usual, do not used thermo gun yet, but will. Left electric fan on for a while after I shut off the engine, and the car did restart 15 minutes later. Will investigate Skips products, and check with Mac. Mac's is actually only 24 miles from where cousins live in West Falls, New York. Mac's is in Lockport. I usually go to Mac's when we visit, which may be August.
Thanks, Chuck
