Have read in past of the blocks that have a exact out line of intake gasket, about an 1/8" raised area. What or where do I look for information about this type block. Information appreciated, Bruce
( engine block that is in my 36 now )

My understanding is that the intake surface is not raised but the metal around it is lowered. This is common in 1941 blocks. Any chance this 36 style block was cast later as a replacement?

Bruce Is your block water pump in head or block?
Short or long crank?

Does your block have water pump block off plates? 37- 38 21 stud blocks had the raised manifold surface and water pumps on the block. When used in a 36 or earlier they were blocked off and used the water pumps mounted on the heads.
That's what is in my 36 pickup.

Compare the two pictures above, you'll see that the pic from G2 has the raised surface that was machined, leaving the rough casting on the outer edges as expected, and Bruce's block appears to have been milled on the outer edges for some strange reason.

I'm 90% sure Ford made replacement long blocks in the 21 stud water pump in block style before WW2. If you went to the Ford dealer for a rebuilt engine exchange you got one of these along with the block off plates and any other conversion parts needed to bolt the engine into your car. These engines had the "raised" intake and lack the "core plugs" on the pan rail. This style engine was never bolted into a car at a factory in the USA.

Bruce,
Your "78" series block, while not being 36 original,
is a great engine ---has insert main bearings!
Actually has same rotating assembly as 36 LB.
Unique block-- first ever for me.
Please confirm that it does not have side pan rail
bumps as per casting core holes.

Thanks for the Thread and noticing the unique
"raised intake surface" ---and picture!
Good thread guys.

Bruce,
Yes---Good pictures. Seems to confirm 38 Coupe's
conclusion that your engine was a new 37/38 parts department replacement. With 36 heads and plates on
block water pump boss.
Thanks Gene Tulsa

Hold on just a minute,,,the engine on my 35 is a 21 stud but does not have the raised intake surface___ but does have the block off plates bosses although I'm using the wp here ...I guess some had and some did not have raised intake .....

Your particular "replacement" block was most-likely a '37-'38 regular production engine originally, vs an "across the counter" replacement block with the "raised" surface. DD
