Brendan, call Mac VanPelt... If you have never, he is very well informed. He also has a web site that will answer your questions.

You could call me, as my collection of stuff includes examples. PM me your number if...

Brendan, just wondering, based on your questions, what you are doing? Putting later gears in a '36 case, rebuilding a '39 transmission, or ?? Certainly MacVP can help you with these questions. Other folks here may also be able to help if we knew what you are doing :)

Brendan, I presume you mean the cluster gear thrust washers and not the intermediate gear thrust washer.

Yes, a 39 trans has a front oil seal

Yes the front cluster thrust washers and the rear cluster thrust washers are the same and interchangeable

No the thrust washers did not come in different thicknesses.

As an aside, if the rear thrust washer wore out the case, you could machine shorten the cluster and slip in an extra front thrust washer to maintain proper tolerance.

I bought a 39 Trans for my pickup, the guy I got it from was a older gentleman and he seemed very honest. a good Friend of mine said that I should open it up, and take it apart, to see if there is anything inside that should not be in there. like the shifter pin.
my work bench is a mess, so I have the parts to fix the 36 trans, and its all apart, I would like to put it back together and put it aside for now. output it back together to maybe use at a later date.

oh I called Mac Van pelt, I have a front seal and his book coming, my work bench looks like a bomb went off on it there is a small space I cleared off for the trans

Those second gear thrust washers do come in different thickness. I forgot what you shoot for but I think it is the .008 range.

do the second gear thrust washers where out?

Which transmission are you referring to on this question, the '36 or '39?

The '36 trans has a 7069 thrust washer in front of second gear and a 7071 in back of second gear. I have seen several 7071 thrust washers break into pieces and drop into bottom of case, allowing second gear to move back and disengage from the collar. I have not seen many, if any, of these thrust washers that have worn out, but I guess it's possible. MacVP has illustrations of these gear sets on his website that would allow you to see the part numbered thrust washers I mentioned above. Clear some space on that work bench and gitter done :D

that's what happened in the 36 trans, the 7071 washer broke in half, and the broken piece took off some of a tooth on the cluster
